What the DXF holds
- A HEADER section with the variable $INSUNITS set to 4, which means millimetres.
- An ENTITIES section with the drawing itself.
- One closed POLYLINE per part. Each panel and each divider is a single outline that ends where it starts. Tabs and slots are corners of that outline, not separate lines.
- EOF as the last record.
A DXF stores plain numbers, so the unit matters. If your program asks for a unit when it opens the file, choose millimetres.
What the SVG holds
The SVG export has a viewBox in millimetres that matches the size of the layout, and one closed path per part. Both files hold the same drawing: the parts placed as the packed sheet in the preview shows them.
Counting the outlines: a tray with dividers
One of the fixtures is an open tray with an inner size of 180 × 120 × 50 mm, two dividers along X and three along Y. It has a bottom, four walls and five dividers.
| Parts | Pieces | In the DXF | In the SVG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom | 1 | 1 closed POLYLINE | 1 closed path |
| Walls | 4 | 4 closed POLYLINEs | 4 closed paths |
| Dividers | 5 | 5 closed POLYLINEs | 5 closed paths |
| Total | 10 | 10 | 10 |
For this tray the script checks that the DXF has a HEADER with $INSUNITS = 4, an ENTITIES section, one closed POLYLINE per part and a final EOF, that the SVG has a millimetre viewBox matching the layout and one closed path per part, and that no number in the result is missing or infinite.
Kerf is already in the outline
The outlines in both files are moved outwards by half the kerf you typed. Do not add a second kerf offset in the program that drives your machine, or the joints come out too tight. Type 0 as kerf in the form if you prefer to compensate there. The kerf page has the details.
What the check does not cover
The fixtures read the text of the files. They do not open them in any drawing or machine program, so nothing on this page is a statement about a particular program or laser. Open the file, measure one part on screen and compare it with the part list before you cut.
Read this before you buy or cut
- Dimensions. You enter the inner width, depth and height. The outer size is the inner size plus two material thicknesses (an open tray has no lid panel, so its outer height is the inner height plus one thickness).
- Not test-cut. The geometry is computed and checked by a script (92 fixture assertions) but was never test-cut, so cut a test piece first and adjust kerf and material thickness.
