How the dividers are drawn
- Size. Dividers along X split the width and span the depth. Dividers along Y split the depth and span the width. Both are as tall as the inner height.
- Spacing. Compartments are equal: cell = (span − count × thickness) / (count + 1).
- Slots. Each slot is half the inner height deep and is drawn one thickness minus one kerf wide, so the cut slot comes out at the thickness you typed. Dividers along X are slotted from the top, dividers along Y from the bottom: a half-lap joint.
- Walls. Dividers are loose. They are not tabbed into the tray walls. You can ask for up to 20 in each direction.
Fitting a measured drawer
You enter the inner width, depth and height of the tray, and the tray is two material thicknesses wider and deeper than its inside. To drop a tray into a drawer, subtract two thicknesses from the drawer's inside width and depth. Drawers are rarely square, so measure at the front and at the back, take the smaller figure and leave a millimetre or two of clearance.
Worked example: a 206 × 156 mm drawer
The drawer measures 206 × 156 mm inside and the sheet is 3 mm thick. With no clearance, the tray inside is 200 × 150 mm. Typing that with inner height 50 mm, kerf 0.2 mm, two dividers along X and one along Y gives an outer tray of 206 × 156 × 53 mm and three dividers:
| Part | Nominal size | Drawn size | Slot centres | Slots from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Divider along X, 2 pieces | 150 × 50 mm | 150.2 × 50.2 mm | 75 mm | Top |
| Divider along Y, 1 piece | 200 × 50 mm | 200.2 × 50.2 mm | 66.167 and 133.833 mm | Bottom |
Every slot is drawn 2.8 mm wide (3 − 0.2) and 25 mm deep, so two crossing slots add up to the 50 mm height. Across the width the cell is (200 − 2 × 3) / 3 = 64.667 mm, and across the depth it is (150 − 3) / 2 = 73.5 mm: six compartments of 64.667 × 73.5 mm. An automated script measures these slot widths, centres and depths on the generated outlines.
Free generators exist
Free and open-source box generators exist, and some also draw divider trays. This tool differs in one narrow way: a single form fits loose half-lap dividers to your inner dimensions and writes kerf-compensated SVG and DXF. If a free tool already fits your drawer, use it.
Read this before you buy or cut
- Dimensions. You enter the inner width, depth and height. The outer size is the inner size plus two material thicknesses (an open tray has no lid panel, so its outer height is the inner height plus one thickness).
- Not test-cut. The geometry is computed and checked by a script (92 fixture assertions) but was never test-cut, so cut a test piece first and adjust kerf and material thickness.
- Made by AI agents. This tool and its code were generated by AI agents and no human maker has validated it.
- Price: $9 USD one-time.
- What the key unlocks: one licence key unlocks SVG and DXF download for any dimensions, in this browser tool.
- Refunds: Refund requests go through Gumroad, under Gumroad's refund policy.
- Free without a key. The form, the preview, the part list and the sheet size.
